While at university, she became involved in theatre<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/captain_s.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-150 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:20% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/muriel_china.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/muriel_china.jpg 600w, https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/muriel_china-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/muriel_china-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1981, she took an extended trip through parts of Asia including Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Burma, Nepal and India. This experience inspired her to switch her focus from acting to writing.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 19%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, she works part-time for the Toronto Public Library.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/stack_books.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-152 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/stack_books.jpg 720w, https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/stack_books-284x300.jpg 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:24% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/canoe.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-153 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/canoe.jpg 600w, https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/canoe-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cannoing and hiking are two of her principal passions.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\/<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Baillie\u2019s first novel, <\/span><em class=\"\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/?page_id=341\"><strong class=\"\">My Sister Esther<\/strong><\/a>,<\/em><span class=\"\">&nbsp;was published in 1995, followed by&nbsp;<\/span><em class=\"\"><strong class=\"\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/?page_id=334\">Madame Balashovskaya\u2019s Apartment<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><span class=\"\">in 1999. The latter was translated into Hungarian and German. In 2006, her third novel,&nbsp;<\/span><em class=\"\"><strong class=\"\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/?page_id=322\">The Shape I Gave You<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><span class=\"\">received acclaim nationwide.&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #333333; font-family: arial, tahoma, verdana, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"\">Her 2009 novel,&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><em class=\"\"><strong class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/?page_id=6;#incident-report\">The Incident Report<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #333333; font-family: arial, tahoma, verdana, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"\">was nominated for the Scotia Bank&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong class=\"\">Giller Prize,&nbsp;<\/strong><span class=\"\">and was adapted as a feature film.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Darkest Miriam<\/span><span class=\"\">, starring Britt Lower (of&nbsp;Severance&nbsp;fame) and Tom Mercier (Le Reigne Animal), had Charlie Kaufman as executive producer and was directed by Naomi Jaye. It premiered in New York at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2024.<\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #333333; font-family: arial, tahoma, verdana, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/?page_id=6;#heinrich\"><em class=\"\">The Search For Heinrich Schl\u00f6gel<\/em><\/a><\/strong><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #333333; font-family: arial, tahoma, verdana, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"\">&nbsp;came out in&nbsp;September 2014 with Pedlar Press in Canada, Tin House in the US, Actes Sud in France, and Lem\u00e9ac, in Quebec. &nbsp;A digital companion&nbsp;to&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong class=\"\"><em class=\"\">The Search For Heinrich Schl\u00f6gel<\/em><\/strong><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #333333; font-family: arial, tahoma, verdana, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp;can be explored at the&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong class=\"\"><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/schlogel.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schl\u00f6gel Archive<\/a><\/strong><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #333333; font-family: arial, tahoma, verdana, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"\">. Her sixth novel,&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/?page_id=6;#if-clara\">If Clara<\/a><\/strong><\/em>,&nbsp;was followed by&nbsp;a work of call and response,&nbsp;<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/?page_id=6;#sister\">Sister Language<\/a><\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;which was co-authored&nbsp;with her sister, Christina Baillie, and nominated for the&nbsp;Trillium Prize&nbsp;in 2019. Her memoir,&nbsp;<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthabaillie.ca\/?page_id=6;#blue\">There Is No Blue<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, was published by Granta Books int the UK, Coach House in Toronto, and is being translated into french for&nbsp;Les \u00c9ditions Alto.&nbsp;Baillie is a fellow of The Dora Maar House. She has been awarded grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Ontario Arts Council.
